Areas of application
Fastening the battery cells: Adhesive films are used to attach individual battery cells in a battery pack. This ensures that the cells are securely and stably positioned and prevents them from moving or shifting.
Insulation of the battery cells: The task of adhesive insulation films is also to electrically insulate the individual battery cells from each other. This is important to prevent short circuits, for example.
Protection of the battery cells: Cushioning or abrasion-resistant adhesive films are used to protect individual battery cells from shocks, vibrations and other damage.
Heat dissipation: Insulating electrically and conducting heat is the task of thermal management materials from CMC. Their main purpose is to dissipate heat from the battery cells and protect them from overheating.
- Fire inhibition, prolongation protection: UL94-V0 listed materials to reduce flammability and protect against the rapid spread of fire, e.g. in the event of a thermal runaway.
Additional functions
In some applications, adhesive films are also used to implement additional functions in battery packs. Examples of this are
- Attachment of temperature sensors to the battery cells: This enables the temperature of the battery cells to be monitored and can help to prevent overheating.
- Fixing electronic circuits: (double-sided) adhesive films are used to implement electrical circuits in battery packs. This can be, for example, the BMS (Battery Management System) for controlling the charging and discharging process of the battery cells.
The selection of the appropriate adhesive film for a particular application depends on a number of factors, including the type of battery cells, the size and shape of the battery pack, the environmental conditions and the desired functions. The main advantages of CMC Klebetechnik products are their high performance (breakdown voltages from 5kV to over 10 kV), their low thickness (a few 10µm to around 1 mm; hardly any loss of installation space) and their punchability. The production of precisely fitting molded parts in particular makes subsequent assembly considerably easier.
Choosing the right adhesive film
Choosing the right adhesive film for a battery pack depends on a number of factors, including:
- The type of battery cells: Adhesive films must be suitable for the type of battery cells used in the battery pack (material, size and shape).
- The operating conditions: Adhesive films must be suitable for the operating conditions of the battery pack, e.g. temperature and humidity.
- The costs: Adhesive tapes and adhesive films from CMC Klebetechnik are usually customized and therefore offer a good balance between product price and advantage in further processing.
Products from CMC
The following are some examples of the use of adhesive films from CMC Klebetechnik in battery packs:
- Fixing FPC cables in the battery housing (double-sided, shear-resistant adhesive tape)
- Increasing the creepage distance in high-voltage applications (highly resistant film against creepage distance formation), e.g. on busbars
- Lining of battery housings with flame-retardant film (replacement of heavier metallic solutions (fire protection cage) with a PP film)
- Dissipation of heat during the charging and discharging process with simultaneous insulation (self-adhesive thermally conductive insulation for quick and easy installation and excellent heat transfer)
The use of adhesive films and die-cut parts from CMC Klebetechnik in battery packs has become an important technology due to the wide range of variants available. It helps to facilitate assembly and improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of battery packs.
